Q: What Does Anorectal Manometry Test?
A: It tests the function of your anal sphincter.
Q: What is the anal sphincter and what does it do?
A: The anal sphincter, simply put, allows you to poop (pass a bowel movement). It uses two different rings of muscle to regulate your elimination of stool. You can flex the outer ring at will to retain or expel feces. The inner ring is made of involuntary muscle and holds the feces in your rectum until you need to eliminate it.
Q: What can anorectal manometry diagnose?
A: A wide range of gastrointestinal disorders can be diagnosed such as; Hirschprung’s disease, fecal incontinence, and chronic constipation. After diagnosis a treatment plan can then be created.
Q: How long does the procedure take?
A: Just 15 minutes from start to finish.
Q: Is it painful?
A: No, you may feel a bit uncomfortable, but it should be painless.
Q: What should I expect during the procedure?
A: The person performing the procedure will have you change into a medical gown and lay on either your back or side. The catheter with a small un-inflated balloon is then inserted into the rectum. Once the catheter is inserted you will be asked to squeeze and push at different times. During this time the balloon is inflated and pressure is measured.
Q: Will I be sedated?
A: You will not be sedated during this procedure as it is painless.
Q: Can I drive myself?
A: Yes, since you will not be sedated you may safely drive afterwards.
Q: Are there side effects after the procedure?
A: In general, no. You should be able to resume all normal activities immediately afterwards. However, you may experience slight soreness.
Q: Are there risks with this type of procedure?
A: This is a very low risk procedure with very little to no side effects.
